For Now Innocent Korean Man Freed From Prison

Han Tak Lee, 79, of Queens, New York, was convicted of the arson related death of his daughter in 1989.

New scientific information that discredited methods used then time in established fire science today set Mr. Lee free for now or until the prosecutor calls for a new trial to begin.

According to the Reuters article “Assistant District Attorney Matthew Bernal on Friday did not oppose Lee’s release on bail. He said his office is reviewing whether to retry Lee. The current district attorney in the county, E. David Christine Jr., is the same prosecutor who put Lee in prison in 1990.” – Reuters.

Mr. Lee’s attorney who worked for 25 years to free him has high hopes that a new grand jury will not be convened in the interest of the state.

In 1989, Mr. Lee’s daughter who a 20-year old woman had suffered from mental challenges and she died as a result of the fire set at Camp Hebron outdoor prayer retreat.

The Asian/Korean community hopes that Mr. Lee has been through enough in his senior years and they hope the State prosecutor will not seek a retrial for the former upstanding prominent business leader.
